Meeting Minutes

April 21, 2009

Washington Elementary Library 

OPENING:  Tim Higgins called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. 

Special Guest, Tony Marinelli from Camp Invention, spoke to the group about the program at Willoughby Middle School.    Camp will be held June 22-26th.  The base price for camp is $205 per child.  There are several ways for discounts.  There is a sibling registration which is $165/ each, or Bring a friend which is $185/ each or online at www.campinvention.org which would be $200.  Mr. Marinelli said that there are five modules at camp, two are repeating each year and three new.  He also said that all the staff members and counselors are coming back. 

Election of WEAGT Officers.  Annette Thompson, Nominating Committee, passed out paper ballots and announced the candidates for the upcoming year.  The candidates were as follows:

                        President – Sue Luck

                        Vice President – Tonya Mihalek

                        Treasurer – Ryan Cummins

                        Secretary – Joyce Hribar Fiebig

 Congratulations to all for being elected to the WEAGT Board for the 2009-2010 school year.  The new officers will take office in June.  Ryan will step up to fill the vacancy in the treasurer’s position immediately. 

Principals Report:  Mrs. Stevens congratulated the new board members.  She stated that the OAT test’s started on Tuesday April 21st, and went very well.  The students and staff seemed to be relaxed.  There is also going to be a school picnic for staff and students only sometime in May.  Mrs. Stevens also wanted to let everyone know that Study Island is available all year long, as encourages families to take advantage of the website.

Vice Principal: Mrs. Harker congratulated all the new board members.  She stated that there will be a new parent orientation on May 11th at 6:30 pm this is only for the parents.  She received an email from Mary Ellen, Lorain Count Gifted Coordinator, and she is hosting an evening for teens with Ken Deluca, who specializes in Teens’ anxiety.  This will take place on April 28th, from 7-8 pm at Lorain County Community College in the Stockard Auditorium. 

Mrs. Harker passed out a Student Profile form to help teachers know the students before they enter the classroom.  We were asked to review/comment and return to Mrs. Harker.

Tim Higgins spoke about the meeting with Administration.  The Zenith program covers gifted and talented students from 1st – 6th grade, once the students leave 6th, they have honors classes in 7th.  There are many changes coming to the program and there will be a report with more information to be distributed at the next meeting on May 14th

Tim also stated that we should get ideas from the teachers what their needs for next year might be, so we can start planning the budget. 

Tim opened the floor for discussion:  Many felt as though the W-E School website should be made more user friendly, or possibly have a guided tour of the website for the interested parents. 

Amy Soltesz, PTA President – Spoke of a possible Chick Fil-A fundraiser night.  The next PTA meeting is April 30th, and it is Elections. 

Sue Luck spoke about teacher appreciation week, which will be held the first week of May.  Kim Evans is heading this up, and this year is a Beach Theme. 

She also stated that we have three teachers retiring this year, two Zenith, and one Mainstream.  Field Day is June 1st, and the Back to School picnic will be in August.
