WEAGT MEETING – NOVEMBER 12, 2009

MINUTES:

Present:  Board Members:  Sue Luck, Tonya Mihalek, Ryan Cummins, Joyce Hribar Fiebig;         Administration:  Betty Stevens, Amy Harker;                Parents:  Shanti Blatnik, Amy Soltesz, Kim Vitello, Donna Burrell, Julie Bailey, Jennifer Jesberger, Sandy Foltz;

Meeting began at 7:03 PM. with the pledge of allegiance.

Welcome by Sue Luck;  All attendees stated their names and name(s) of their Zenith student(s).

Minutes from the October meeting were distributed and approved with minor changes;  They will be posted on the website;

Comments from Mrs. Stevens:  There are many events scheduled at the school between now and Thanksgiving.  (1) Washington is participating in a pilot program which involves the study and analysis of data collected from our student population to see if pre-school programs and in-home programs influence school performance.  Assessors will be at the school for five days and they will compile a report maintaining the anonymity of the students.  (2) Hearing and visual screenings will be held.  (3) An H1N1 clinic will be held at South High.  (4) On November 24th a safety drill will be conducted with a lock-down simulation.

Comments from Mrs. Harker:  Mrs. Harker is thankful that the school levy passed.  She is also grateful for the opportunity to have attended the OAGC conference.  She purchased many resource materials regarding differentiation and other materials as well.  The schedule for the Fine Arts lessons have been set for January, February and March of this school year.  Next topic was activity at the Middle School.  The Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search  (NUMATS) provides an opportunity for middle school students to take the ACT and SAT tests to further identify gifted students and their particular talents.  Registration for the January test is December 10th.  Dan Hoffman has a website with a practice test.

Treasurer’s Report:  Ryan Cummins stated that he looked into opening an account with ING which would be FDIC insured.  Motion to invest WEAGT funds with ING was made by Sue Luck and Sandy Foltz seconded.  Motion passed.

President’s Comments:  Sue Luck stated that more accelerated reading (AR) materials are needed for the Washington Library.  The current WEAGT budget allocates $1,500 towards that goal.  Also, the purchase of one laptop should be made because funds were specifically donated for the purpose.  Mrs. Harker responded that she will contact the appropriate person (Larry) in the district to make that purchase.  She is also going to purchase a video camera and is waiting for prices to come down.  Sue discussed recent events such as the levy passage and also the parent reaction to the WEP (Written Education Plan) reports.  There seemed to be lots of questions about the plans.  Sue then announced that we have a new chairperson for the auction – Sandy Foltz has volunteered to do so.

Sandy then spoke about her goals for the auction this year.  She wants to make the event more fun and relaxed with a feeling of community between the parents.  This year’s auction will have a luau theme with the catch phrase of, “Build Our Treasures”.  She is offering a Stevens Boulevard home location to be auction central for storing donations.  She would like to do a parent survey regarding the auction.  The student letter writing campaign, which was so successful last year, will soon be underway.  WEAGT mails out the letters and the children get a chance at winning $170 or an I-POD.

Mrs. Harker asked for a Zenith Teacher in-service day.  WEAGT would be asked to pay for One-half of the cost of teacher substitutes.  The cost would be $550.  The day would be November 19th.  Motion to approve this payment was made by Jennifer and seconded by Tonya.  Motion to pay $550 for substitutes was approved.

Auction volunteers are needed.  Letters will be sent asking for volunteers to all Zenith parents.

No progress has been made regarding the By-Laws review.  No one has come forward to volunteer to do so.

PTA President Amy Soltesz reported that Santa Shop will run December 1 – 4th;  Movie Night will be November 13th and Washington Night at Marco’s Pizza will be December 17th

Meeting adjourned at 8:00 P.M.

Submitted, Joyce Hribar Fiebig, Secretary
