WEAGT's History
The Willoughby-Eastlake Association for the Gifted and
Talented or WEAGT, was created in October 1978, by a group of concerned parents.
This group felt that the school system was not meeting the needs of their
gifted children. The group was
formed to provide a means for parents with children of similar needs to be able
to come together for a sharing of ideas. It
was also meant to provide a vehicle for these parents to express collectively to
the school board their concerns for their children’s education.
The school board was first approached in the fall of 1978 about providing a
gifted program. By the fall of
1979, a pull-out program began, involving approximately 50 children.
Eventually the program was extended to provide full time, self-contained
classes for gifted children as well as maintaining an optional pull-out program. Today there are approximately 300 children in grades 1-6
participating in the school system’s gifted program.
As
the program grew, so did the need for those materials that enhanced the program.
The finances needed for these materials were outside of the school
system’s allowable budget.
As a means to provide the necessary funds, what started as a wine and
cheese tasting has become an Auction & Dinner event.
This event has continued to grow and develop over the years.
In the last three years alone, the WEAGT sponsored auction has provided
the Zenith Program with more than $60,000 in funding.
